Moving to Accra!

Updated: Oct 28, 2021

Getting ready for this new African adventure, but first we've got to deal with the stateside pre-move stuff!

So, we’re moving to Africa – in two months!! And this isn’t our first relocation – we originally lived in Houston. Just before Christmas 2017 my husband comes home from an extremely long day at work; he walks in the door to say: We’re moving to Charleston! An unexpected and somewhat unwanted transfer; we picked up and

moved to Charleston, SC, with a two-year-old and baby number 2 on the way. It’s been a somewhat tumultuous year trying to settle in to a new routine just to be upended again once our second daughter arrived in July.

And, of course, once we finally got settled into a new normal with just the four of us here in SC we get another notice – we’re moving to Africa by April 1st! Accra, Ghana to be specific. I know a lot of things are going to change, for every single one of us. But for now it’s a relatively stressful period in the move – the waiting. We’ve got everything ready on our end, the required paperwork and documents, which leads me to a tangent – with all my husband’s and my international experience, I always wondered how my kids were going to top it. My husband grew up in India and I lived in France and Egypt and traveled extensively in Europe. But it turns out my girls still found a way to top us: my oldest daughter got her first passport at 10 months-old and traveled to India and France by the time she was one. And now my youngest daughter has her first passport – at 5 months-old – and will live in a different continent long before she turns 1-year-old!

So the hurry up and wait stage: so many questions that are unanswered right now: where are we going to live? Will there be furniture? What do we need to bring? What do we store? What should we get there? What will even be available there? And just the biggest question of all: What will it be like there?

Some of these questions will be answered sooner than others, but I look forward to getting them all answered, one at a time, and I hope you will join me for the journey too!
